Frozen Blueberry Waffles

Finally a review of frozen waffles. If this blog has a weak spot, it is definitely waffle-related. Well Breakfast Best Blueberry Waffles are here to rescue us all.

I eat frozen waffles for breakfast a lot of mornings while driving to work. You can toast them and wrap them up in a paper towel then delicately balance them on top of your coffee cup while you try to lock the door before the alarm goes off. And two waffles are less than 200 calories, so it's perfect.

Before learning of ALDI, I was a devotee of Kroger's generic brand of blueberry waffles. They have fewer calories than Khashi and are much cheaper than Eggo.  And honestly, there is no such thing as a gourmet frozen waffle, so the bar is relatively low when it comes to taste.

With frozen waffles it's all about texture and browning. I saved one of my Kroger brand waffles to directly compare with the ALDI waffle. And I'm 90 percent sure the waffle on the right is the Breakfast Best Blueberry Waffle.

You'll notice the ALDI waffle has fewer "blueberry" dots and overall, it has less blueberry taste. But what it lacks in fake blueberries it more than makes up for in structure. The grid was solid and deeper than Kroger brand, allowing for a uniformly crispy final product. Also, Kroger brand tends to have edges that get stuck in the toaster and burn whereas the ALDI waffle is much rounder. Also, this picture doesn't show it, but the ALDI waffle is noticeably thicker.

I have already bought a second box of these waffles for next week. I give Breakfast Best Blueberry Waffles an A.  They are cheaper substitute (Kroger brand is usually $1.99 when on sale and I think these were $1.89 regular price) and the quality is the same if not better. You really can't ask for more from ALDI. Thanks ALDI!
