Deutsche Kuche Sunflower Seed Bread

This stuff is terrible. DO NOT BUY SUNFLOWER SEED BREAD.

So I went home on Saturday to use my parents' wheelbarrow to dye a rug (long story) and they presented me with this bread that they had purchased at ALDI. Just opening the package was a terrible experience. It smelled like dog biscuits!  Dog food - ALDI sold my parents dog food disguised as seed bread. And my Dad ate half a loaf.

He also managed to convince me to try a little piece. And I put some of this seed bread into.my.mouth.  I couldn't even chew it completely. I spit directly into the trash can and had to wash my mouth out with water from the faucet. So so terrible.

This Deutsche Kuche Sunflower Seed Bread gets a double I. Steer clear - bread shouldn't look like meatloaf and smell like dog food.

Also, while we're at it, go ahead and stay away from Deutsche Kuche in general. This is not ALDI's best brand.

  1. Differnet strokes for different folks.
I like this bread and most other of the Deutsche Kuche products...especially the Paprika Chips and Spaetzle!

  2. I have to agree with njaldilover. I've bought multiple packages of this bread in the past and thought it was good. (May be just a matter of taste....either you like this style of bread or not....but, this is how it's supposed to taste.) I'd give it a solid "L" :-) (I also buy the DK spaetzle....another "L")

  3. The Deutsche Kuche potato pancakes might be my favorite thing at Aldi. If your Aldi has them, you should give them a shot! They can redeem the whole Deutsche Kuche brand.

  4. This is a type of bread typical for Germany....if you like this type of bread then i will actually say it's the best you can get in the US...but again you have to like this type...it's also a lot healthier than most other types of bread you can get here.

  5. This bread is awesome. As good or better as the $4.50 sunflower seed bread from Whole Foods. Of course it's an acquired taste, if you like to eat bleached, genetically modified, enriched flour based, chemically altered to look and feel like rubber type "bread" - please enjoy!
The Spaetzle are OK (a bit thin for my taste), the paprika chips are great; but try the frozen Brezels - I wish I had a bigger freezer to store more of them!!! Go Aldi!

  6. I love this bread! I was born and raised in Europe so we had this on everyday bases. I don't like white bread so much so thank you ALDI!!!

  7. Deutsche Kuche is an exceptional brand and I am often pleasantly surprised by it. I think this sunflower bread is just not to your taste. I do not care for it. But that is not its fault, but my own preference. The quality of Aldi food for a budget store surprises us frequently. It is as good or better than much higher priced stores for many items. You have to know how to shop and to appreciate value I think.

  8. This is the best bred you can buy in the US for the price. I eat this and other from this line like Whole Rye and Pumpernickel for the past 3 years. It is very tasty , hearty and very satisfying. I can not imagine not having it. It helped me to look and feel better. I have no idea what is wrong with the taste perception of people that are complaining. Did they grow up eating some heavily processed foods?

  9. I was born and raised in Germany/Netherlands so I know how it tastes or supposed to, I prefer the DARK type over this type bread any day. Indeed, it is my observation that a lot of people are used to all the bad processed foods they consume and has impaired their taste butts (LOL) If it is not genuine it is a very poor copy. I too wish the Papriak Chips would be around all year. I rcently purchased some of the BBQ Chips as that is supposed to be close to the Paprika Chips, yuck, took a bite and dumped it in the trash. It was awefull Salty and other crap in it yuck yuck yuck. No wonder that people do not taste anything that is GOOD and healthy as they are used to processed bad food full with Natrium/Salt and Sugars and what not more. I will make my own, at least I know what I am consuming. No offense intended. I guess it is how one is raised and fed, Often the Deutshce Kuche, or German kitchen, has pretty good stuff. Just hate it when I read that it has been manufactured on equipment shared with nuts, peanuts etc. So very often I sadly have to put it back on the shelf. I could say the same of some typical USA items, which are all starch and fillers, have no nutritious value full with chemicals, coloring, sugars, salt and so on....it can be a loaded topic.... to each his/her own.

    1. I've been going to Aldi a lot more because of their healthier choices. They are my first choice now for groceries. I am so grateful for their skinless chicken breasts WITHOUT added hormones and antibiotics! I got some there tonight for $1.49 lb. Their 100% orange juice is probably the best I've had. Their produce looks fresh and beautiful. I bought the pumpernickel bread as it seems very healthy by the ingredients and has 6 grams of fiber per slice. I admit that I didn't think it was the tastiest, then I spread coconut oil on it and had it with a said. I'm addicted! I went back and bought 4 more packs because they don't expire for 6 months. I also tried the 1000 island dressing and think it's very good, too. Thank you Aldi for making so many healthy choices easier to find and easier to pay for.

  15. I was given a 1/2 loaf by a co-worker and I liked it. Turned into a breakfast with butter and honey. Would like to try other kinds.

  16. Tastes like Grapenuts, and you're getting a lot more bread per square inch :-). Throw some cream cheese and lox on there, with some fennel seeds, it's good.

  17. Love it. Tried it. Will go back to get more. Before they are sold out. I eat it with nothing on it, with a cup of herb tea. It's great with fresh peaches. Or with peanut butter
    and honey.

  18. I am looking all over my area to find my German bread. Aldi carried the brand last year, and I bought eight packages. Unfortunately, Aldi does not have it available this year! So disappointed!

  20. The bread is very typical of German cuisine. It is an acquired taste if you're not accustomed to it. It works well with smoked fish, Braunschweiger etc. or just some cream cheese or butter.

  21. I stock up..... when I can. It’s very hard to find and eat healthy in the U.S., most of the products sold are processed and are not very nutritious.

  22. This is a favorite of mine. Some butter and braunschweiger and it's perfect.

  23. This is a true German artisan rye loaf that is both healthy and delicious! American rye bread is mostly wheat flour. There are no cheap fillers in this; the addition of sunflower seeds enhances the taste and health value. Just toast it and add a little Kerry Gold butter. This bread hits a home run every time!
